How to properly care for your Denver fur coat

October 18, 2021

Whether vintage or brand new, your Denver fur coat is an investment piece that can last decades when properly cared for. Much like your Denver leather jacket, a fur coat requires maintenance to keep it looking its best for years to come. To keep your Denver fur coat looking just like new, we have compiled a few expert tips.

Clean properly

Even if you only wear your Denver fur coat during the cold winter months, it is important to have it professionally cleaned and conditioned at least once a year. Animal fur can harbor dust, oils, and odors that only an expert furrier can tackle. Professional cleaning can also protect your fur from shedding and help maintain its natural luster.

Hanging your coat at home

Like leather jackets, fur coats need special hangers to keep their proper shape. We suggest opting for a wide, durable padded hanger with a longer neck that prevents the coat's delicate collar from pushing up against the rod. Fur is also very susceptible to dust, and unless you wear your fur coat often, it should be placed in a 100 percent cotton bag while not in use. Avoid plastic bags, as these do not allow air circulation and can cause your fur coat to dry out and potentially crack. Winter months can bring light snowstorms and showers, if your coat gets damp shake out as much moisture as possible then hang it to dry in a well-ventilated space before placing it in your cotton storage bag.

Use caution when wearing

Avoid accessories like strappy purses, heavy necklaces, and broaches that can mat your fur and create bald spots over time. If that is unavoidable, try placing the accessory under the coat on your clothing to prevent crushing and matting the fur. Avoid applying hair spray and perfume when wearing your coat. The alcohol can penetrate your fur and cause drying, while the oils from your perfume can create a rancid odor that may be impossible to remove. Body oils and makeup can also ruin your fur in the same way. To avoid this, consider adding a neck scarf to your outfit as a warm and fashionable barrier.

 Store when not wearing

Fur, although beautiful and warm, can be ruined by improper long-term storage.
