Your guide to fur and leather storage from your Denver leather store!

February 11, 2021

While we would love for you to never have to remove your fabulous Denver leather jacket and fur coat, we know this is impossible (and not that great for the material). So, when you are ready to take off your coat or jacket for the evening, for traveling, or for the season- how should you store it? These luxurious materials often require a bit more maintenance than other pieces and can be easily ruined by improper storage. Find out the best way to store your fur and leather garments to keep them looking their finest, below!

For home

Taking into consideration heat, moisture, and light is extremely important when storing these materials at home. Exposure to any of these elements in excess could ruin your fur or leather garments. For instance, sun damage can dry out the pelt of your mink coat while also creating discolorations on your leather jacket, excessive moisture can cause mold in both fur and leather, and heat (whether direct or indirect) can create irreparable cracks and creases. Along with avoiding over exposure to these elements, we recommend storing your natural fabrics in a dark, cool place inside a large 100% cotton garment bag. These bags will allow your fur and leather to breathe, while offering additional protection from dampness, pests, and light.

For travel

If you are planning a trip or a move, you might be concerned about how to safely transfer your leather and fur goods. Although it may be possible to wear your leather jacket while traveling, this may not be possible with a fur or during a move. To best travel with these expensive pieces, it is worth purchasing a quality breathable garment bag, especially for your leather garments. For fur you may need something sturdier, like a heavy wardrobe or top-quality cardboard box. Before placing your fur in its container be sure to stuff the coat’s sleeves carefully with an uncolored acid-free material (like plain white paper), turn the shoulders inside out, and use a soft padding material to wrap the coat.
