Avoid these four things to keep your Denver fur coat looking fabulous!

December 10, 2020

Whether you just purchased the perfect Denver fur coat or have owned one for years, you may be unaware of some of the best practices when taking care of it. Because of this, the professional furriers at Jonval Leathers and Furs have compiled a list of a few things to avoid when wearing and storing your fur coat. Use these expert tips to keep your favorite fur looking fabulous!

Moisture
The amount of moisture in the air, or humidity, can wreak havoc on your fur garments. Too much moisture and your fur could mold. Too little moisture and your coat may become brittle or dry out, potentially causing irreparable cracks. While this is more of a serious concern during long-term or off-season storage, it is still important to keep in mind when wearing your coat daily. Because of its need for very specific humidity conditions, be sure to avoid hanging your fabulous fur in an area that is too dry or too humid.

Heat
Along with moisture, heat exposure can severely damage your fur jacket. It is essential that you never put your coat in the dryer or try to clean it with hot water. Excessive heat can dry out the pelt of the fur making fragile and brittle. Heat can also dry out the fur’s natural oils, causing your coat to become lackluster and dull.  If your coat was exposed to water or needs cleaned, we always recommend you take it to a professional fur cleaner, like the experts at Jonval.

Moths and other insects
While you may think you are already avoiding these pesky critters, you would be surprised. Moths and other insects like to nest deep inside your soft, plush fur which can create permanent, visible holes. Mites, fleas, and other insects may also be hiding inside your closet, ready to infiltrate and destroy your coat. To help prevent moths and other bugs, be sure to keep your fur coat in a cotton bag when not wearing. This will help keep insects out, while also protecting your fur from any other unwanted elements.

Light
Another fur coat culprit, direct sunlight oxidizes with your fur, potentially causing irreversible discoloration. This discoloration is often unpleasant and can make your fur unwearable. Because your fur coat requires such specific storage needs, our biggest piece of advice is to always utilize Jonval’s fur coat storage services during the warm months or whenever you retire your coat for the season. With a temperature and humidity-controlled environment, our vault is the optimal setting for keeping your treasured piece in pristine condition.
