Tips for a great leather jacket alteration

July 24, 2019

Leather jackets work best when they are properly fitted, which means you might need to get your Denver leather jacket custom fitted and altered. Alteration sounds overwhelming - we know! But here are our insider tips, XX to be exact, to get your best leather jacket alteration.

Start with a good base
Starting with a good base is important when getting any alterations - specifically when getting your leather jacket altered. If you get an oversized jacket, it’s going to be hard to get your jacket altered properly. Inversely, if you start with a jacket that’s too small, alterations are going to be more difficult and costly. Make sure that a leather jacket fits as perfectly as it can prior to taking it in to get tailored.

Find the perfect tailor for you
Finding a great tailor is important, but it’s also important to find a tailor that you are comfortable communicating with. It’s important for you to communicate openly with your tailor about what how you want the jacket to fit, and how you want it to look. A great tailor is not only good at their craft, but their willing to have the difficult conversations with you.

Wear comfortable, casual clothing
When you go to your tailor appointment, it’s important to wear clothing that you are not only comfortable wearing, but clothing that you will wear often with your leather jacket. If you would typically wear a t-shirt and jeans, wear that to your alteration. Afterall, your leather jacket is hopefully something you will wear often and bo most comfortable in.

Manage your expectations
It’s important to remember that no matter where you go for your leather jacket alterations, significant changes won’t happen within an hour. You should expect to wait a few days, maybe even 1-3 weeks, for an alteration to be complete. Good things take time, don’t rush or push your tailor to hurry to completion.

Don’t DIY
Leather can be a difficult fabric to work with, and it’s important not to attempt to alter your leather at home. Even if it’s the smallest of issues, do not try to fix your leather at home. A tailor is always worth the cost and time when it comes to altering your leather jacket. Afterall, you don’t want to make a mistake that can permanently damage your investment.
