Is it time to alter your Denver fur coat?

February 4, 2021

Is it time to alter your Denver fur coat?
A quality Denver fur coat is a luxurious investment piece that can last decades. However, what do you do when your coat no longer fits your style, climate, or body? While you can always purchase a fabulous new fur to add to your collection (and we have some great styles), alterations are a great alternative for this durable and versatile material. With alterations, Jonval’s master furriers can transform your old, frumpy fur into something new and perfectly tailored to you. Still on the fence? Check out our list of common coat complaints that can be easily fixed with alterations, below!

The coat is too long

While you may have preferred a longer fur coat in the past, it is completely possible your needs have changed. Although long fur coats offer unbeatable warmth and comfort, they can seem bulky or unflattering to some. If your coat needs a makeover, shortening the hemline is a great option! A shorter hem can offer a less formal look and create a more flattering appearance, especially for those on the petite side. If you have recently relocated to a milder climate, consider shortening the coat to your waist. The shorter length will make rocking your favorite fur comfortable, even in milder temperatures.

Portions of the fur are damaged or matted

While fur is an incredibly versatile material, it can be easily damaged. If your coat has spots that have seen better days, you may be surprised at the many ways your fur can be saved! If your coat is composed of a fur that is longer in length, shearing is a terrific and easy option. By shortening the length of the fur, matted or damaged portions may be removed or camouflaged. Having an expert furrier, like the team at Jonval, repair and properly clean damaged or fragile areas on your coat may also be beneficial.

Your style has changed

If your style is constantly evolving, you may find yourself bored with the fur coat your once adored. While we love the classic fur coat styles, you may desire something a bit more fashion-forward. If this is the case, there are many alteration options for you. For those looking for something glamorous and dramatic- consider coloring your fur! Dyeing your fur coat a deep red or blue hue is a great way to stand out and look fierce. For those who prefer something with a vintage flair, try removing the sleeves to transform your favorite coat into your favorite vest.

Learn more about leather grades from your Denver leather store!

January 27, 2021

Learn more about leather grades from your Denver leather store!
If you have been thinking about purchasing a quality Denver leather jacket, now is the perfect time! However, with so many options available, you may find yourself confused about what grade of leather you should invest in. This is completely understandable. The way leather is graded, or categorized, can be overwhelming (especially if this is your first leather purchase).  To help save you from any frustration, our experts have put together a quick guide explaining some of the key traits and differences between the most popular leather grade options. Find out more below and become a leather pro!

Top Grain

Although top-grain leather is the second highest in quality, it is generally considered to be the most popular grade. Made from the top layer of the cowhide, this type of leather is created through a process called splitting, wherein the hide’s outer layer and hair is removed. The surface is then sanded and smoothed, removing any large imperfections. These processes give top-grain leather a slightly thinner and more flexible feel than full grain (described below). They also provide fantastic stain resistance and impeccable durability.

Full Grain

Considered the highest-quality of leather, full-grain jackets are some of the most high-end, luxurious, and beautiful investment pieces available. While all leather is created by tanning a cowhide, this type of leather maintains the most of its original state. This means that any natural imperfections and markings are left intact, creating a truly one-of-a-kind piece. Full-grain jackets are extremely durable, but only somewhat water resistant. Over time, this quality leather will develop a thin protective layer called a patina. While the patina is useful in guarding the leather from wear and tear, it is also beloved due to the gorgeous sheen it creates. This unique characteristic is one of the many reasons full-grain leather is extremely valuable and frequently sought-after for high-end goods.

Split and Genuine Leather

These types of leather are typically considered to be at the lower end of quality and grade. Although these varieties are often the least expensive options, they may not offer as much durability and longevity as full or top grain brands. Split-grain leather is typically made from the bottom of the cowhide and does not contain any natural markings. However, it is often softer and more pliable. Genuine leather is also made from the bottom of the cowhide, although it is even more processed than split-grain. This type of leather is often the least expensive, but tends to be less beautiful and significantly more fragile than higher quality varieties.

How to avoid these common Denver leather jacket mistakes

January 20, 2021

How to avoid these common Denver leather jacket mistakes
If you own or recently invested in an amazing Denver leather jacket, you may be unsure of the best way to take care of it. If that is the case, we are here to help! Although leather is an incredibly durable material, it can be ruined by simple missteps. Below, our knowledgeable team has put together a list of a few common mistakes you should always avoid. Follow this quick guide to ensure your jacket stays fabulous for years to come!

Mistake #1: Using a wire hanger

We understand, wire hangers are easy to find and typically cheap. However, when it comes to your leather jacket, wire hangers should never be used. Even if it is only for a short period of time, these types of hangers can cause permanent, unwanted bumps and creases in the shoulders and neck of your beloved jacket. To avoid this, we highly recommend using a wide, padded hanger that will not distort the leather’s shape.

Mistake #2: Washing or drying your jacket at home

While it may be tempting to throw your jacket in the washing machine or dryer, you should never do this. Because many leathers require specific cleaning conditions, washing your jacket at home has the potential to cause permanent creases and other irreparable damage. Drying your jacket can also have devastating effects on leather, as dryers pull the necessary moisture from the material. This can leave you with a permanently cracked and dried out jacket. Instead, we recommend always using a reputable leather cleaning service, like the experts at Jonval.

Mistake #3: Not reading the care instructions

This extremely easy step is the best way to make sure you make no mistakes with your jacket. Although some leathers can withstand certain amounts of heat and water exposure, others can be completely ruined. Because of this, we always recommend checking the manufacturer’s care instructions on your leather jacket and follow it to the letter. Typically located on the interior of the jacket around the neck or torso, if you are unable to find this label be sure to contact one of our leather experts for guidance.

Mistake #4: Improperly storing

When storing your jacket at home, you should never fold it, as this can crack and crease the leather. Also, always hang your garment in a well-ventilated closet that does not receive any direct sunlight (which can discolor the leather). Finally, when you are ready to retire your jacket for the season, it is extremely important to always utilize professional storage options, like the ones at Jonval. These temperature-controlled facilities are the perfect option to keep your leather jacket in pristine condition! Tips for breaking in your Denver leather jacket

January 13, 2021

Tips for breaking in your Denver leather jacket
One of the things people love the most about their Denver leather jacket is how it seems to get better with age. New leather jackets can sometimes feel a little stiff and uncomfortable, but this is easy to fix. Breaking in, or softening, your leather garment is easier than you think. If you have finally purchased the Denver leather jacket of your dreams, be sure to follow our tips to break it in properly.

Wear as much as possible

The absolute best way to break in your Denver leather jacket is to wear it as much as possible! Although you may be tempted to save your leather jacket for special occasions, this can make the breaking in process take much longer than necessary. Wearing your leather jacket helps the leather move, stretch, and breathe, enabling it to mold to your body over time. If you are working from home, try wearing it while you work. The constant arm and elbow movement can help wear down those areas, making them softer and more comfortable. Out for a walk, wear your leather jacket! You can look stylish and stay warm all while breaking in your leather jacket. Lounging around the house? Wear your jacket or drape it over you like a blanket. Wearing your jacket as much as possible is one of the easiest ways to get that leather soft and comfortable.

Consider conditioning

It is easy to forget that leather comes from an animal hide, so sometimes your leather may become a little dry. If you find after breaking in or wearing your jacket often it loses some of its suppleness, consider conditioning the leather. If you are unsure of what leather conditioner to use, contact our experts for advice. By conditioning your jacket, you will ensure it stays soft and supple for longer.
Know what to avoid

There are many things that can harm your leather jacket and being aware of what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to do. When breaking in your Denver leather, it is key not to use unnecessary force. Although leather is known for being an extremely durable material, damage to your leather jacket can be difficult (or impossible) to repair. Because of this, avoid wearing your jacket during strenuous activities that could cause rips, tears, or holes . Also, be sure to check the garment’s label and care instructions. If your coat is made from a more delicate material, such as lamb or goatskin, be sure to take that into consideration while breaking it in. It is also important not to soak your leather jacket, as many materials do not respond well to water.
