Why you should professionally store your Denver leather and fur this summer
With summer quickly approaching, you may be unsure of how to care for your Denver leather and fur garments. While there are fun ways to include these treasured pieces into your warm weather wardrobe, you may also be ready to retire your leather and fur for the summer season. If that is the case, the experts at Jonval have you covered! By investing in professional leather and fur storage from Jonval, you can ensure your prized outerwear stays safe from damage. Although this may seem unnecessary, we promise it is not. Still on the fence? Check out why our experts think you should professionally store your Denver leather and fur this summer, below!

Keeps leather and fur safe from heat, humidity, and pests

Quality fabrics like leather and fur require very specific conditions for storage. This is especially true when it comes to storing these items for long periods of time, like the summer months. Although it may be tempting to take your chances on storing these at home, it is important to remember how sensitive the materials are to heat, humidity, and pests. For instance, fur subjected to elevated levels of humidity can develop mold in the fibers. While leather and fur exposed to high heat and low humidity can dry out, become brittle, and crack. Pesky insects can also be a problem. Between moths attracted to your favorite leather bomber jacket to mites burrowing into your fabulous mink coat- keeping pests out of your leather and fur goods can be difficult even in the most insect-proof of closets. By investing in professional storage services from Jonval, you can take the guesswork out of storing these pieces and keep them from incurring any unnecessary damage.

Professional storage is cheaper than replacing items

With the average cost of fur and leather garments ranging from the hundreds to thousands, investing in professional storage seems a small price to pay to keep these items safe. While it is possible to safely store your leather or fur at home, keeping conditions perfect for these items can be difficult (and costly). By storing your items in the Jonval vault, you do not have to worry about humidity levels, heat, light, or pests. Also, depending on the number of items and length of time you plan to store them, this can be much cheaper than repairing damages or replacing these garments.
With a temperature and humidity-controlled environment, the Jonval vault is always the optimal setting for keeping your treasured piece in perfect condition. How to store your Denver fur coat for summer

May 21, 2021

So you’ve enjoyed your Denver fur coat for the winter, and hopefully even spring, but you might be wondering what to do with your winter coat now that summer is just around the corner. Fur coats are an investment - they are expensive, luxurious, delicate, and beautiful. With proper care of your fur coat, you can actually sell them for more than they are worth! As you are getting ready to store your fur coat for the summer, we’ve compiled some of the best tips for you.

Climate

The most important thing you can do is to keep your fur coat from laying out in hot areas and in direct sunlight. Summer heat and humidity dry out the natural oils in a fur coat, leading to brittle hairs and cracking hide that cannot be fully restored. Keep your fur coat in a dark and cool place, a closet is the perfect spot.

General Storage

There are plenty of things you need to consider when self-storing your fur coat. Self storage is when you decide to store your fur coat at home (in a cool dark place). While storing your coat, make sure you...
  • Do not store the fur in plastic. Plastic does not allow for air circulation and contact with the garment bag may cause the hairs to break.
  • Leave room around the fur for air circulation. In other words, don’t wedge your fur into an already tightly packed closet. Proper air circulation allows moisture from your body to dissipate before mold can grow.
  • Keep the fur dry. If it becomes damp, shake it out and hang it to dry. If it gets soaked, then take it to a Denver leather and fur repair store for restoration.
  • Cover the fur with a protective cotton cover. The cotton yields more readily to the press of the fur and allows air to circulate, while shielding the garment from dust.
  • Keep insects and other vermin from your fur. Insects and rodents will eat the hide and may nest in the fur, creating a nasty mess and forever ruining the garment. Cedar chips, mothballs, and certain other herbs packaged in a sachet (mint, rosemary, ginger, cloves, lavender, sweet woodruff, tansy, lemon rind) will repel insects.
Something else that’s good? Take your fur coat to a professional cleaner before storing for the summer. Getting your fur coat professionally cleaned once a year will ensure it remains soft, silky, and shiny. Proper cleaning and conditioning prior to storage will extend the life of your fur hats and coats. Fur coats in Denver deserve the same care as fur coats in New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis--places that understand winter just as much as Colorado residents do.

If you’d like help and advice when it comes to self storage, or would like to utilize one of our temperature controlled vaults, contact Jonval Leather & Fur. Jonval’s fur vault is temperature and humidity controlled for proper fur storage. Call (720) 377-1555 or contact us today to inquire about cleaning, conditioning, and storing your valuable leathers and furs over the hot summer months.

Three easy ways to break in your leather jacket from your Denver leather store

May 13, 2021

Three easy ways to break in your leather jacket from your Denver leather store
If you have recently purchased a new Denver leather jacket, you may be surprised at how the leather feels. While new leather can be a bit stiff or snug, this is completely normal. Leather, although extremely durable and supple, needs time to adjust. Like most quality products, leather gets better with age and oftentimes needs to go through a period of being “broken in.” This process simply means the material’s fibers need time to loosen and soften. While this may seem complicated, breaking in your new favorite jacket is simpler than you think. Turn your new leather jacket into the most comfortable coat you own with our three easy tips, below!

Wear constantly

One of the best things you can do to break in your new Denver leather jacket is to wear it as much as possible! Wear it to work, on short walks around the block, to dinner, at home, or even to happy hour. Anywhere you go, try to wear your leather jacket. By wearing it as much as possible, you can ensure the fibers loosen to fit your frame perfectly. While doing this, there are a few important things to keep in mind. Break in your jacket with caution, as whatever is done during this process cannot be undone. Do not wear during strenuous activities, as this could damage the leather (potentially beyond repair). Also, keep an eye on areas that receive the most bodily friction, like the collar, pockets, and elbows. If you notice these areas becoming too distressed too quickly, be sure to contact a leather expert before trying to break it in further.

Always follow manufacturer’s instructions

While some websites and tutorials may claim that exposing your jacket to water or heat can help with the breaking in process, this may not be the case for the type of leather you purchased. In fact, many grades of leather can be damaged from extended exposure to these elements. This is why reading your jacket’s care instructions is imperative. Before and during the break-in process always be sure to follow the care label to the letter, as going against what it recommends could cause irreparable damage.

Try a quality leather conditioner

This easy and effective route is also great for those with older or brittle leather jackets. We recommend using a quality conditioner that is formulated specifically for the type of leather your jacket is made of. However, as stated above, always check the garment’s care label prior to conditioning. If you are unsure if you can condition your leather jacket or want advice on what type of leather conditioner to use, be sure to contact a Jonval leather expert for advice.

Wear your Denver leather jacket even when it is warm out!

May 10, 2021

Wear your Denver leather jacket even when it is warm out!
With temperatures on the rise across most of the country, you may be thinking it is too warm to wear your favorite Denver leather jacket. However, adorning your leather jacket in warm weather without overheating is much easier than you think! In fact, we have rounded up three of our favorite tips to keep you feeling (and looking) cool. So, if you are ready to rock your leather no matter the weather, check out our styling tricks below!

Choose a lightweight jacket in neutral shades

One of the easiest ways to keep comfortable in this must-have leather accessory is to pick jackets that are lightweight and in neutral shades. Although we all love a classic black style, this can soak up the sun’s rays and keep in heat. Instead, opt for lighter colors like nudes, tans, whites, or pastels. These hues will help keep overheating at bay while creating a chic style. Additionally, we recommend wearing jackets that are lightweight. We suggest avoiding quilted styles, as these have thicker interiors that are designed to keep you warm by trapping in body heat. Also, choose jackets that are constructed with thinner, rather than thicker, leather. These lightweight leather materials offer maximum breathability and can help keep you cool when temperatures rise.

Layer wisely

One of the easiest ways to stay cool while wearing your leather jacket in warmer weather is to layer with other lightweight clothing. Although this may seem obvious, what you wear under your jacket is extremely important to consider when styling your late spring and summer outfits. On warmer days, we suggest pairing your leather with tops made from fabrics like cotton, rayon, and linen, as these are some of the most breathable fabrics. Additionally, wearing a short-sleeve t-shirt or tank top underneath your leather jacket is a fantastic way to look effortlessly fashionable while keeping comfortable.

Wear open or draped

Another easy solution to wearing your leather jacket in warm weather is to leave the front of it unzipped or unbuttoned. While you may prefer the look of your jacket closed in the front, this will trap in more body heat. Leaving your leather jacket opened will allow body heat to escape and help with air flow. If you live in an area that tends to be chillier in the mornings and afternoons but warmer in the evenings, you can also try draping your jacket over your shoulders. This elegant look is perfect for when you want to showcase your personal style, but not get too warm.
If you are ready to add a quality Denver leather jacket to your wardrobe, the professionals at Jonval Leathers and Furs are here to help! With a wide variety of leather and fur jackets available, we can help you find (or design) a piece that is perfect for your style.

Taking care of your Denver leather jacket

May 3, 2021

Taking care of your Denver leather jacket
From the classic bomber to cafe racer, there is truly a leather jacket for every style and taste. Your Denver leather jacket is a timeless piece that, when properly cared for, can last decades. However, many are unaware of the best practices when caring for their Denver leather apparel. At Jonval Leathers and Furs, we know all about the importance of leather upkeep. Because of this, we have compiled a few tips to keep your leather jacket looking fresh for years to come.

“No wire hangers, ever!”

Much like oil and water, wire hangers and your Denver leather do not mix. Although this might seem a bit dramatic, wire hangers can severely alter your leather jacket, especially in the shoulders. Instead opt for a wide, preferably padded hanger. Be sure to hang your jacket in an area that is well ventilated and away from extreme heat or sun (see tip 3). You should also make it a habit to hang your jacket, rather than folding it. Keeping your leather jacket folded for extended periods of time can cause unwanted creases and other types of damage that may not be repairable.

Check the weather

Although we always encourage you to rock your Denver leather jacket, if there is significant rain on the horizon, it might be best to leave the leather at home. Prolonged exposure to a good deal of water (think torrential downpour) can cause damage. If your jacket does get caught in the rain, do not fret! Water exposure most likely will not ruin your prized possession but be sure to hang your leather jacket to dry on a proper hanger (see tip 1) away from direct heat as soon as you possibly can. If you live in an area with frequent rain, consider consulting with our leather specialists on waterproofing options and the best type of leather for your climate.

Clean and store properly

Do not put your Denver leather jacket in the washing machine (we are so serious). Tossing your leather jacket in the wash can cause irreparable damage and ruin your favorite leather piece. Instead, we highly recommend you utilize our outstanding cleaning services. For small stains, a slightly damp cloth can sometimes do the trick.
However, we highly suggest you consult with our experts before trying to remove any stains yourself. If you find a small hole or rip, do not try to mend it yourself. Instead, make an appointment with our fantastic team of tailors. When storing your leather jacket at home, be sure to keep it in a dry, well-ventilated space with plenty of room to breathe. Do not allow your jacket to be exposed to direct heat or sun, as this can severely dry out your leather, causing it to become brittle and crack.
