Four leather types that you need to know about
Ready for a new look? A Denver leather jacket is the perfect way to take your look to the next level. Not only are they stylish, but leather jackets are durable, versatile, and worth the investment. There are a few different types of leather that you can consider. When you visit your local leather store in Denver, it is good to learn about the four types of leather there are. The type of leather is important - it can help compliment your current wardrobe and even make for a more comfortable jacket.

First things first, leather is made from cowhide. There are four different types of leather that are created from the cowhide - full grain, corrected grain, top grain, and split grain. The most original state of cowhide, full grain, is extremely durable. Full grain leather maintains the most original state of cowhide. Hair and imperfections are not removed and the material is sanded down to create its overall texture. In this original state, this type of leather is extremely durable. Not only is it durable, but it is fantastic at repelling water (if needed). Despite its ability to repel water, remember you should not purposely get your leather jacket wet!

Corrected grain is when an artificial surface must be added to the leather. Because of this modification, it closely resembles full grain leather. However, it is not as soft. It is very durable though. In fact, depending on the material, it may be even more durable than full grain leather. This type of material helps with some imperfections that could not otherwise be taken care of in a normal full grain process.

One of the most popular types of leather sold, top grain, is literally the top layer of cowhide. The process to create top grain leather is also known as “splitting,” as it removes the hair and outer layer. From here, it may be sanded to create its overall appearance. This will also take care of any obvious large marks within it and smooth everything out. The great thing about this type of leather is throughout its finishing process, it remains very durable.

When cowhide is extremely thick, it may be split in two - creating split grain leather. So, the top grain and bottom layers are removed. Additional layers may be split as well hence the name “split grain.” When making this type of leather, this is often how suede is created. This material has a soft texture that is primarily found on furniture.

Why you should consider repairing your Denver leather jacket before purchasing a new one

March 25, 2020

Why you should consider repairing your Denver leather jacket before purchasing a new one
Everyone who loves a good leather jacket knows that the more you wear it, the more comfortable it gets. The leather gets softer, and you may notice you end up wearing it more often! What’s more important - the longer you wear your jacket the more likely it is that it will experience some damage. Due to the heavy use of your leather jacket, it may be prone to getting scratched and snagged by various objects or things such as your car keys, cat, thorn, or twig. To repair those scratches and snags can be quite simple, but it will depend on the extent of the damage. In any case, leather jacket repair requires extra attention to detail and much care. Jonval offers leather and fur repair in Denver that will help you save your beloved pieces.

Have Some Tears?
If the jacket was torn from scuffs or scratches, then it is going to require more detailed repair. Most times, a torn leather jacket may be as a result of not repairing a previous scratch. While tears can cause some pretty serious issues, we recommend you speak with a specialist before throwing it out or attempting to repair it yourself.

Before You Dispose...
Before you think about throwing away a favorite leather jacket, it is highly suggested that you try to get it repaired first. A good leather jacket in recent years is like an old friend that you have developed a trusting relationship with. It could be that due to the daily wear of your jacket, it gets softer as you break it in. In fact, it may not have been as comfortable then as it is now that you have gotten the desired look you have always wanted.

Prevention and Care
When you first purchased a leather jacket and brought it home, it was in good condition or you would have taken it back to the retailer, right? Sure, it looked fabulous on you for some time. However, you probably weren’t providing the proper care to your leather jacket. It could have lasted you longer, in the event that you did. In fact, with proper care, you could own your jacket for up to 50 years. Yes, you heard right – 50 years of good maintenance, especially if you have a good quality jacket.

Repair Steps
You should get to know your leather jacket as you would a friend. Learn how to take care of it with mandatory cleaning. If you are unable to care for it yourself, then take it a professional to clean. If you have done your part in providing the appropriate care to your leather jacket and it is still in need of repair, a professional will assess the damage and find the ideal method of repair.

The leather repair specialist has to ensure that during the repair process, the leather is not weakened. For edges that appear rough, but not torn, the repair specialist can add a mixture of beeswax and mink oil. It improves the roughness, softening it, but not as much. The combined beeswax and mink oil also preserves the leather and prevents it from being stained.

Don’t try to repair your jacket on your own. Leave it to the professionals since leather is so delicate while being repaired. Select leather repair specialist with years of experience in working with various types of leather. To have your leather jacket repaired, contact the experts at Jonval Leather and Fur today.

How to store your Denver fur coat, now that spring is here!

How to store your Denver fur coat, now that spring is here!
Hello Spring! While it isn’t exactly spring at the moment, we are already experiencing warmer weather here in Denver. With warmer weather, comes a change in wardrobe and you may be wondering what to do with your fur coat. The first thing we recommend is that you do not throw out your fur jacket just because of a new season - afterall it is an investment! But we have put together our three tips that you need to know.

#1: Proper Place
The first step in storing your fur coat is to pick the perfect place. The perfect place to store your coat is a dark cool place, away from any direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can affect the color of your coat over time - no one wants that! Even a closet near a window with direct sunlight won’t be the best place. Keep that in mind. Fur thrives in colder conditions, after all that is why most people purchase a winter coat. Do your fur a favor and store it in a cool place.

#2: Proper Process
Ever use moth balls in your closets? Do not do this when it comes to fur coats. Moth balls tend to absorb moisture, which can make closets and other storage spots humid. Humidity is one of the worst things you can do for your fur coat, so try to limit it when possible. You’ll also need to get the right hanger - you’lll need a broad shoulder wood hanger so that the coat doesn’t lose its shape while hanging. Also, we encourage that you keep the coat hanging versus laying down, and purchase a cloth bag to help keep dust and other dirt off your coat while it’s in storage.

#3: Proper Care
As long as you follow the aforementioned two tips you should be fine! However, there are some additional things you can do during the “off” months to help increase the life of your fur. Such as ensuring there are no other clothes/hangers touching the cloth cover and fur jacket. We also recommend that you occasionally remove it from your bag and wear it. Just remember to keep it sheltered from the elements.
